The mythology in 'The Wisdom Keepers Trilogy' is drawn from stories we still tell on a dark night, when a chill mist rolls in low and draws us closer together. The Madage are inspired from the folklore of the Welsh and Cornish 'Knockers' - malevolent spirits who lived deep in the pits. Miners used to leave food out for them, an attempt to appease their anger, as late as the 1960s. Mori, the Sea Goddess can claim her roots way back in Orkney mythology where she was known by different names in different times.
When the Romans invaded, they systematically sought to destroy the spirituality of Britain. Today, we cannot claim to have an unbroken lineage back to our ancestors as Ena does with Naois; but it is just possible that threads of our old beliefs were captured in tales. We now know that fairy tales such as Red Riding Hood, Cinderella, Hansel and Gretel, and Snow White were rooted in a shared history dating back to the birth of the language of Ena's ancestors.
Collecting these ancient myths together is still a passion of mine - whether reading from a book or drawing up a chair to listen to a tale told late at night around the hearth of a Broch in the Outer Hebrides. These are the myths that gave birth to the world of Ena of The East Marshes.
